Wanted: Information on Trinity County's Sawmills & Railroads

Trinity County is unusually rich in railroad and sawmill history. Murry Hammond is working to produce Rusty Rails & Dusty Trails history newsletters on the following Trinity County subjects. In general, I am looking for photographs to illustrate these histories, and surviving family stories to personalize them. If you have any pictures or stories on these old log railroads or sawmill life that you would be willing to let us copy for our publication, I'd love to speak with you by mail or e-mail or telephone. Contact: Murry Hammond (click for e-Mail) or call anytime at 818-653-4626.

Here are our needs:

Waco, Beaumont, Trinity & Sabine Railway (1922 - 1959). The "Wobbly." We want to produce a larger publication on this company's very interesting railroad story.

Wobbly depot at Trinity, 1940's.

Groveton, Lufkin & Northern Railway and the Trinity County Lumber Company (1890's to 1931). We want to produce a larger publication on this major Groveton sawmill and it's railroad. Communities of interest along the route are Apple Springs, Trevat and Helmic.

Trinity Lumber Co. log train near Groveton, ca. 1910.

Trinity's big sawmill: Known variously as the Thompson Lumber Co., the Rock Creek Lumber Co., and the Texas Long Leaf Lumber Co. During its time it was a very large mill, and through its history it operated its own railroad lines with their own fleet of locomotives and equipment. We are looking especially for stories about the milltown and the log trains.

Thank you!
