Wanted: Information on Sabine County's Sawmills & Railroads

Murry Hammond is working to produce Rusty Rails & Dusty Trails history newsletters on the following Sabine County subjects. In general, I am looking for photographs to illustrate these histories, and surviving family stories to personalize them. If you have any pictures or stories on these old log railroads or sawmill life that you would be willing to let us copy for our publication, I'd love to speak with you by mail or e-mail or telephone. Contact: Murry Hammond (click for e-Mail) or call anytime at 818-653-4626.

Here are our needs:

Lufkin, Hemphill & Gulf Railway (1912 - 1938). This company was the incorporated tracks of the Knox Lumber Company, which had a large mill at East Mayfield, just west of Hemphill. For a time it operated a car or bus fitted with railroad wheels. The vehicle hauled passengers and mail. We are looking for stories of seeing it or riding it, and - has anyone ever seen a photograph?

East Mayfield mill town . Looking for stories about life in the town during the Knox sawmill days.

Watson sawmill / Talltimber Lumber Company. This small mill was located on a long spur north of the L. H. & G. Ry., between Bronson and Hemphill. We are wondering if they had their own locomotive and tram, and we also need a photograph.

Thank you!
