Murry Hammond is working to produce Rusty Rails & Dusty Trails history newsletters on the following Morris County subjects. In general, I am looking for photographs to illustrate these histories, and surviving family stories to personalize them. If you have any pictures or stories on these old log railroads or sawmill life that you would be willing to let us copy for our publication, I'd love to speak with you by mail or e-mail or telephone. Contact: Murry Hammond (click for e-Mail) or call anytime at 818-653-4626.
Here are our needs:
Sullivan-Sanford Lumber Company, 1906 - 1912. The Sullivan-Sanford Lumber Company built a tram railroad 11 miles in a northwest direction from Naples. The line was incorporated as the "Naples & Sulphur River Railroad", but was never recognized as a common-carrier by the Railroad Commission. At its peak, the mill employed 500 people at the mill and in the woods. We have only one photograph, of the Sullivan-Sanford mill building. We need any kind of images of the log railroad.
Jefferson & Northwestern Railway at Naples. Does anyone remember the J.& N.W.'s line entering Naples on the south-east end, near Morris Hampton's lumber yard? It was there just for a few years in the 1920's and 30's. I am looking for any photographs of that end of town during those years, that might show this railroad's tracks in or near Naples.
