Of Interest:

Parent company Clark & Boice Lumber Company built spurs off the J&NW mainline at various points in central Cass County. One line spurred off near Lanier, another near Flat Creek Church, and at least one other somewhere west of Linden. The two companies maintained an agreement that allowed log trains to operate over the main line from remote loading points to the company's mill at Jefferson. Clark & Boice had a similar agreement with the Louisiana Railway & Navigation, where a camp near Harleton in Marion county was reached via a spur that left the LR&N at Lasater, approximately 10 miles east of Hughes Springs.

Other rough logs were moved by water to the Jefferson mill from the east, via the Big Cypress river. Clark & Boice maintained several log boats and barges for this purpose. One such log barge was later converted into the "Queen of the Cypress", a "dance" boat where people could go out on the waters of the Big Cypress and enjoy a live band and dancing. -- Murry Hammond

Wanted: Information on Cass County Sawmills & Railroads
^Top^

Murry Hammond is working to produce several Rusty Rails & Dusty Trails history newsletters on different Cass County railroads, sawmills and logging camps:

Jefferson & Northwestern Railway (1899 - 1941)
Clark & Boice Lumber Company (Mill at Jefferson, camps in Cass and Marion)
Texas, Arkansas & Louisiana Railway (1897 - 1918, Atlanta to Bloomburg)
J.J. Casey's Sawmill, mid-way between Atlanta and Bloomburg.
Jefferson Lumber Company / "Kildare & Linden Railroad"
Munz Community (Log front for the Redwater Lumber Co. in Bowie County)

I am looking for photographs to illustrate our histories, and surviving family stories to personalize them. If you have any stories regarding life along these railroads and sawmills, I'd love to speak with you by telephone, mail or e-mail.

Contact Murry Hammond by e-Mail or call anytime at 818-653-4626. Thank you!

Clark & Boice Lumber Company Logging Camp
This is one of the logging camps of the Clark & Boice Lumber Company in Cass County. The precise location is unclear, but the C&B company had at least two camps located west and southwest of Linden in the area of Cave Springs and Flat Creek Church. Pictured in the photograph is Jefferson resident Prue Freeman.
